Noodle House Organic Pasta, Ireland, 071 85589. My
favourite pasta and favourite quick meal - less than 5 minutes,
especially if I have my own sauce pre-cooked as I often do ! Ingrid
Basler's wonderful pastas (18 variations in all) produced in her Co. Sligo,
Bord Bia-supported, micro business have been around now for 4 years and
are thankfully available in many supermarkets. Uncompromisingly she uses
only organic eggs in her recipes. Her products are certified by
Demeter Ireland, license no. 9605271 IRL- 01B1- EU.
Tesco Ireland seem somewhat shy about branding their bread
organic. The two types they stock in Cork have nothing on the outside
label to indicate what they are but if you look carefully you will see
a small circular Soil Association sticker on the bread itself which is
obviously left on during baking. Organic Petit Pain are particularly delicious.
Talking of pasta - organic
spaghetti in our area costs, 99p for 500g (Roma - packaged in Ireland), which is
twice the price of ordinary spaghetti. But the Bunalun product (also
packaged in Ireland) at IP 1.49, costs almost 50% more again. Surely 300% is much too
much of an organic premium especially when there is no appreciable quality
difference!

supplies, efficient filters should be considered an absolute necessity.
Bottled waters are not the solution, at least in the West - in some

company's main product is an under-sink filter with a separate tap on the
sinktop. This is offered with a unique lifetime warranty on parts and
extends to the filter been taken away by the owners if they move house. I
like another model too, a stainless steel counter-top filter,
which is, low-tech (no plumber needed), transportable,
high quality and good value. Adrian Hamilton, will look after you.

www.vendemiawine.com
There are very few labourers in
the organic vineyard in Ireland and I'm sure there are no fortunes to be
made there, especially given our dreadful ratings in the organic league
table and the draconian excise duties and other taxes on our wine
imports (Why so, you may well ask? I suspect there are stout and spirited
reasons!).
But there are always stalwart souls about, ready to take on the Sisyphean
task of doing ethical, small-scale business in our beloved,
rule-and-support-the-powers-that-be bound isle.
And two such are the Tobler's, husband-and-wife team, Urs (Swiss) and Helen
(Irish) who established Vendemia Wines in 2002. Ethically-driven to the
core, they only offer near-European wines from France, Spain, Italy and
Switzerland, on the premise that 'it seems fair to
support those closer to home and is more caring for the environment.'
I'm glad to hear from them too that I was not the only one that had been
often disappointed with the organic wines on offer in Ireland. They agree
that many of the early wines imported were 'somewhat vinegary' and
over-priced. With the rapid progress in research and experience in organic
vinification, however, the Toners firmly believe that there is now
good quality out there and at reasonable prices.
I, for one, am prepared to believe them and will soon try some of their
labels.
They sell through their website www.vendemiawine.com
and at their premises at Unit 24, Hebron Road Industrial Estate, Kilkenny.
They attend some farmers' markets - Kilkenny, Wednesday morning - Leopardstown,
Friday and Pearse Street on Saturday mornings. Phone them at 056 70225.
Mary Pawle is an importer and distributor of
organic wines - www.marypawlewines.com
and is only 20 miles from my base here on Beara. She has more than 60 wines on her list, which she
selects herself from impeccable organic sources. It was a delight to hear
that she knew of the lovely Clairette de Die wines from the Drome
(including a spectacular sparkling wine from a grower I met last October)
which I will do an article on later when I'm sure they are available. Look
out for the excellent quality and value, Corduan, Coteaux du Languedoc. Some local outlets are, Hugo's Pantry, Kenmare; Organico and Super
Value, Bantry, and of course, the famous Fields in Skibbereen. Contact
email; marypawlewines@oceanfree.net

A few years ago I had the great good fortune to be
taken to the Valle de la Drome in south-east France by a good friend.
Amongst many wonderful things I enjoyed from that region was the luscious
local wine Clairette de Die and the sparkling Cremant de Die, both
organically produced. Die is the name of the largest town in Drome
and it is truly a place to die for (sorry couldn't resist that!).
To my great disappointment, even though specialist wine shops seem to
know about this wine district, I have not been able to buy these lovely
wines either here or in the UK.

The house and surrounding five acres of organic
gardens are secluded in the hills of south Co. Clare, about half way
between Ennis and Miltown Malbay.
Price; €320,000
There is a separate
cottage on an acre included in this price. If sold separately, a price
would be negotiated.
I
enthusiastically recommend this property which I would unhesitatingly buy
myself - if I had the money.
It's not the day job (but I like the Wecks), and I will be glad
to act as a go-between.
